Who was William Carey?

"He must have thought of quitting a thousand times. Early-nineteenth-century missionary William Carey faced continual difficulties and heartbreak as he sought to establish an outpost for Christ in India. He buried two of his four young children before his second anniversary there. His distraught wife, Dorothy, lived the remainder of her days behind a locked door. Many supporting churches discontinued their offerings, forcing William to work in an indigo factory to sustain his family. He learned Bengali and Sanskrit in order to translate the Scriptures and to share the gospel, but seven years elapsed before he led his first convert to Christ. Also his early translations went up in smoke as a fire destroyed his print shop. Yet he pressed on".

Larry Clements, Kindred Spirit, Spring 2007, Vol.31, No.1:5

  • Baptist Missionary to India from England
  • Father of Modern Missions
  • His life period: August 17,1761-June 9, 1834
  • Founded the Historic Serampore College, along with Joshua Marshman, and William Ward (known as "the Serampore Trio") in 1818
  • Quote: "Expect Great Things from God; Attempt Great Things for God"

My Carey-Influence!

  • I started to learn about William Carey and Serampore Mission during my Secular School and College days
  • From 1993-1997, I had done my Bachelor of Divinity (BD) from a Serampore affiliated Seminary in South India (Faith Theological Seminary). From where I learned about Serampore Mission in detail, especially in the Indian Church History classes
  • From 1999-2001, I had done my Master of Theology (MTh) from another prominent Serampore affiliated college in South India (Gurukul Lutheran Theological College & Research Institute, Chennai). From where I learned about the Serampore Mission and the Linguistic Rennaissance in India
  • From July 2001-August 2004, I had worked as the Junior Lecturer of the Historic Serampore College. Then onward I started to develop a passion to learn about Carey and his missions with the closer outlook
  • The historic Serampore College on the banks of River Ganges (also known as River Hooghly, one of the most Holy Rivers according to Hindu tradition), and the surroundings resuscitated the missionary in me for a unique mission
  • My visit to the Carey Cemetery in Serampore(sometimes alone, with my family, with friends, with guests, with students, with faculty, with distinguished guests, and thus hundreds of times) enabled me to witness the resting places of great Servants of God like William Carey, Joshua Marshman, William Ward, Hannah Marshman, and John Mack, and that further motivated me to work hard for the Kingdom and leave a legacy for the succeeding generation of people.
  • My three years of stay in Serampore granted me opportunities to stay where Carey lived, teach where Carey taught, preach where Carey preached, outreach where Carey proclaimed, and walk over the soil Carey walked
  • Soon after my marriage in 2001, I myself and my wife, started staying on the Serampore Campus. Both my daughter and my son born while we were in Serampore
  • I was privileged to preach the Word of God innumerable times in Serampore College Chapel (on the campus), Mission's Chapel (where Carey stayed at the beginning), and St. Olav's Church (where Carey worshipped)
  • It was an opportunity par excellence to teach theology classes, where the Serampore "Trio" taught and lived out the theology
  • My researches at Carey Library and Research Institute (CLRC) and at the Serampore College library enabled me to work with the original translation materials hand-written and published by William Carey of the 'Serampore Trio'. While I touched and used the chair, table, staff, coins, hand-written translation materials, and various other important articles, I really felt his presence for renewed commitment in me as a real disciple of Jesus Christ
  • Served as the Chief Editor of Codex (An Annual Publication of Serampore College, started by Serampore "Trio") in the year 2003, with an editorial entitled "The Message of Peace, Unity, Reconciliation..."
  • Two of my published research materials are about William Carey and his works: (1) "Serampore Mission of Bible Translation", Codex-2004 (Serampore: 2004):31-33; and (2) "The Serampore Mission and the Linguistic Renaissance in India", Bangalore Theological Forum, Vol. XXXV, No. 2 (December 2003):123-140.
  • Beyond all the above mentioned areas, Carey influenced me while I was in different parts of India, and in United States, through various seminars, articles, lectures, books, films, and the life and ministry of those who are influenced by him
  • "Expect Great Things From God; Attempt Great Things For God"
